General & Positioning
-
PIMSLS (formerly PMA.studio) is Pathomation’s advanced, fully web-based environment for working with whole slide images (WSI), digital pathology, and virtual microscopy.
It acts as a customizable cockpit for researchers, imaging scientists and histopathologists, allowing users to configure their workflow on the fly with adjustable panels which contain robust tools.
-
PIMSLS is built for:
Research pathologists
Imaging scientists
Bioinformaticians
AI developers
CROs, pharma, biotech & academic research teams
It supports workflows ranging from annotation, quantitative image analysis, long-distance conferencing, case organization, to AI-assisted research.
-
PIMSLS is unique because it is:
Fully customizable: Users can rearrange panels, workflows, ribbons, and layouts.
Interoperable: Works with
all kinds of network enabled storage
third party analysis tools including HALO & Visiopharm
third party AI tools to order and view analyses
the rest of the Pathomation ecosystem including PMA.core, PMA.start & My Pathomation.
Modular and extensible: Integrated annotation tools, conferencing, forms, server connectivity, automation APIs, and AI workflows.
Future-ready: Built to integrate with heterogeneous data sources and advanced computational pathology pipelines.
Research workflows & Customization
-
Users can configure:
Panels (annotations, browser, tray, search, forms, info, bookmarks…)
Ribbon layouts
Panel stacks and interface layouts
Viewport components (overview, scale bar, barcode, zoom control, slide label)
Server connectivity
Shared links & permissions
Custom actions via scripting and the PIMS LS API
This allows each research group to tailor PIMS LS to its own workflow.
-
Users can change:
Grid layouts
Viewport numbers
Tab-based views
Floating vs. docked panels
Administrators can define default layouts for entire teams or studies.
-
PIMSLS plugs directly into your storage drive(s), so images and cases can be browsed in the same way you would access them on your file explorer.
There are also two extra ways to further organize and filter your slides:
You can add metadata using Forms, and search or filter cases and slides based on those form values in the Search panel
The Virtual Tray allows users to group slides, annotate metadata, organize cases, and display slide information such as dimensions, channels, barcodes, and forms. It works like a digital version of the pathologist’s physical slide tray.
-
Yes. Users can:
Bookmark slides & ROIs
Search & filter by form metadata, barcode, filename, classification
Quickly navigate large datasets or folders
Image types, Storage & Interoperability
-
PIMSLS connects to virtually any storage location including:
PMA.core servers
Local drives via PMA.start
My Pathomation cloud (first 10 GB free)
Network drives
Azure
AWS S3
FTP sources
This makes it ideal for distributed research environments, multi-site collaboration, and large-scale datasets.
All Pathomation products support all major file formats. You can see the full list here.
-
Yes.
PMA.start connects local images directly to the PIMS LS environment
My Pathomation connects the user’s cloud workspace
This allows hybrid workflows across desktop, cloud, and server environments.
Annotations & Quantitative Analysis
-
PIMSLS includes one of the most extensive annotation modules in digital pathology. Tools include:
Simple shapes: points, circles, rectangles, lines
Polygon tools: standard polygon, freehand, closed freehand, compound freehand
Multipoint counting tools
All measurements and annotations are CE-IVD certified for diagnostic measurement of distances and areas.
Import/export formats include WKT, Visiopharm MLD, HALO XML, Definiens/Aperio XML, and CSV.
-
Yes. PIMSLS supports:
Import: HALO, Visiopharm, Aperio/Definiens XML, CSV, WKT
Export: HALO, Visiopharm, Aperio/Definiens XML, CSV, WKT
This allows seamless integration with analysis of pipelines, CRO reporting, and algorithm development.
AI and Computational Pathology
-
Yes. PIMSLS includes a built-in AI Analysis module allowing users to:
Run algorithms on a region of interest (ROI), entire slide, or viewport
View results with overlays
Navigate detected features
Validate dimensions to ensure the ROI fits the algorithm’s requirements
Review detailed success/error logs
This is extremely useful for research pipelines, pre-clinical studies, biomarker quantification, and AI validation.
Collaboration & Conferencing
-
PIMSLS supports advanced collaboration through:
Virtual conferences with real-time synchronized on-slide navigation & annotation
Shared links (view-only or full-access)
Custom share options: password protection, expiring links, QR code access
Case- or folder-based sharing for teaching, research, or reviews
Long-distance slide seminars
This makes it ideal for teaching, tumor boards, research groups, and remote collaboration.
